Republicans and Democrats Look For Latino Vote
The mid-term elections are heating up across the nation and right here at home. Republicans and Democrats say capturing the Latino vote will be the key.
Both parties are reaching out to the Latino and Spanish speaking community through political ads and grassroots outreach.
“We have people who speak Spanish and come from the same backgrounds,” said Carlos Gonzalez , campaign manager for State Assmblyman Manuel Perez. ” We can connect with the community and this helps us be a voice for them.”
According to the Pew Hispanic Center , Two-thirds (65%) of Latino registered voters say they plan to support the Democratic candidate in their local congressional district, while just 22% support the Republican candidate, according to a nationwide survey of Latinos. (http://pewhispanic.org)
However, local Republican activist Nellita Hutchinson believes Republicans and Latinos share the same political views and values.
“If you look at the Republican party and Latino population, we are very similar,” Hutchinson said. “The party offers the same morals and support. We care about family and economic support.”
