Rain Makes Messy Tuesday

An area of low pressure brought some rain to the Coachella Valley today.

Up to 0.12 of an inch of rain was reported this morning at the Palm Springs International Airport, Brandt Maxwell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

“Some more stuff is going to roll in from the southeast this afternoon,” Maxwell said.

Up to 0.26 of an inch of rain is forecast to fall in the Palm Springs area through Wednesday night, according to the NWS.

Before this storm, a total of 4.30 inches of rain had fallen in Palm Springs since January, which is 1.16 inches above normal, according to the NWS.

There was a 60 percent chance of rain on Tuesday, decreasing to a 30 percent chance by Wednesday night, the weather service reported.

More than 1,400 Southern California Edison customers lost power today in Palm Springs as the storm moved in.

The outage was reported at 9:20 a.m. in an area bounded by Mesquite Drive to the north, Morongo Trail to the south, Gene Autry Trail to the east and South Cerritos Drive to the west, said Paul Klein of SCE.

The outage was caused by a problem with an underground cable and was not believed to be weather-related, Klein said.

As of 3 p.m., 109 customers were still without power, and there was no estimate on when it would be restored, he said.

Those customers were in the area of Sonora Court to the north, Escoba Drive to the south, Desert Way to the east and Beverly Drive to the west, according to Klein.
