Teenager Arrested For Stabbing In Cathedral City Cove

A 16-year-old Cathedral City boy was arrested today on suspicion of stabbing a 64-year-old man at his residence, police said.

The stabbing was reported as an assault in progress before 7 p.m. Saturday in the 37200 block of Melrose Drive, Cathedral City police Lt. Charles Robinson said.

Police found a man in his 60s bleeding profusely from several stab wounds, Robinson said. The victim told police he was attacked by an unknown suspect and stabbed three times with a sharp object.

The victim managed to fend off the attacker, who ran from the residence and was seen running north down the street, Robinson said.

The victim was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He underwent surgery, was released from the hospital and was recovering, Robinson said.

Police detectives received numerous tips about a possible suspect in the attack, and about 6 p.m. today they took the 16-year-old boy into custody in the area of Cathedral Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Road, Robinson said.

Detectives served a search warrant at the residence where the boy lives and recovered evidence tying him to the attack, Robinson said.

The boy also has an outstanding no-bail felony arrest warrant for arson, police said. He was arrested and taken to the Cathedral City Police Department for further investigation.

The boy was expected to be taken to Indio Juvenile Hall for booking, Robinson said tonight. His name was withheld because of his age.
