Meeting The Volunteers Of The Bob Hope Classic: Peggy Greenberg

The famous Bob Hope Classic will celebrate its 52nd anniversary this January when it comes to the desert. The actors, entertainers, athletes and PGA tour professionals make for an exciting week of golf and attractions. However, there’s a group of people that are the backbone of the tournament: the volunteers.

Nearly 2,000 volunteers contribute about 100,000 hours every year to help successfully operate the event.

At 92 years old, Peggy Greenberg holds the distinction of the longest serving volunteers.

This January marks Peggy’s 47th Classic. After all her years at the tournament, there is not a player, volunteer, or celebrity that doesn’t know her.

“I probably have shaken the hands of everybody that’s ever played in the tournament,” Greenberg said. “They’ll probably have to wheel me in some day, but I’m not going to give up. I’d love to celebrate my 50th anniverary with the Bob Hope Classic. I’ll keep going if they’ll still have me.”

Greenberg sees the tournament as an opportunity to meet and help other people. She’s been able to walk alongside some of the biggest names in the world.

“I was excited about meeting all the big-shots,” said Greenberg. “Anyway, one year just followed another. I’ve scored for Michael Jordan, so that was a fun thing. I have pictures of most of the foursomes for whom I have scored. I had my pictures taken with our first man in space, Alan Shepard. I’ve become close with a lot of the players. They’re always Yogi Berra. Every time he sees me, we hug each other. As a matter of fact, I hug everybody. The Bob Hope Classic has been a big part of my life.”
