How ‘Smart’ Are Smart Meters?

Right now, Southern California Edison is replacing older, mechanical meters with new smart meters. So far, Edison has installed more than 1.5 million smart meters.

According to SCE, smart meters will help you monitor your electricity use and costs online as easily as you check your bank balance. The smart meters are also expected to save you money. But, will they?

I live in a condominium (less than 1,000 square feet) in Palm Desert. I’m very energy conscious and try to save as much electricity as I can. In November, using the older, mechanical meter, my SCE bill totaled $42.68. I just received my December bill. Using the new smart meter, my electric bill jumped to more than $71.00.
