Riverside Dog Hit By Train May Need Good Home

A small dog struck by a train today in Riverside appears headed for recovery and may need a home soon, according to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services.

The 2-year-old terrier mix was discovered early this morning on railroad tracks near Chicago and Marlborough avenues, said animal services spokesman John Welsh.

He said railroad workers spotted the limping female and summoned an animal control officer, who caught the canine and took her to the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter in Riverside for veterinary care.

The black-and-white mutt had no collar and had not been microchipped for identification.

“Her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening,” Welsh said. “Her hind leg was bruised and showed signs of abrasions that could have been associated with being dragged momentarily. The dog’s right ear was also bruised badly, and she had a serious abrasion to her head.”

According to Welsh, veterinarians stitched the dog’s wounds and administered pain medication.

The animal services spokesman described it as a “sad story,” but one he expected to have a “good, happy ending.”
