Inauguration Day For Governor-Elect Jerry Brown

Governor-elect Jerry Brown will be sworn in Monday at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium ? the same place Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger took the oath of office four years ago.

The swearing in will take place with new California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye presiding, Brown’s transition team said.

The ceremony will be followed by a private afternoon reception at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento’s Old Town tourist section.

The auditorium, which holds 3,000 people, was the site of Brown’s first post-election budget forum in December. It also is across the street from the loft he and his wife are renting.

Family, friends, supporters and dignitaries received invitations to the ceremony, Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said. A block of tickets was set aside for the public.

Brown planned to maintain a lean budget on the festivities, he said.

The ceremony will be followed by hot dogs on the Capitol steps. After his first inaugural back in 1978 he went to a Chinese restaurant.

The governor-elect has been focusing on California’s fiscal problems and said the state faces difficult choices. He has pegged the state budget deficit at more than $28 billion over the next 18 months.

This will be Brown’s second tenure in the governor’s office, after holding the office from 1975-83. He is eligible for the new term because his previous stint came before California voters enacted term limits.

The only other California governor elected to a third term was Republican Earl Warren. He resigned the governor’s seat with a little more than a year left in his final term to accept a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.
