Twentynine Palms Marine Base On Higher Alert After Bin Laden’s Death
As the U.S. mobilized its attack on Osama Bin Laden on Sunday, Twentynine Palms Marine Base was ordered to increase its security alert level.
Base spokesman Capt. Nicholas Mannweiler told News Channel 3’s Mike Daniels the order was received Sunday morning from the National Command Authority, several hours before President Obama announced on Sunday night U.S. forces killed Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.
Mannweiler said all U.S. military installations received the same order as a precaution against counter military action.
On Monday, the Marine base outlined what the new security measures will mean:
Security Measures
“The National Command Authority recommended an increased security posture for the nation’s military bases. The Combat Center, along with the rest of Marine Corps Installations – West, is taking the appropriate precautionary measures to ensure the safety of all who live, work and train aboard the installation. This posture will continue until we are told to do so otherwise.”
Death of Osama Bin Laden
“The announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden is obviously a major milestone in the global war on terrorism. But as long as Marine Corps units are deployed to Afghanistan, the (Twentynine Palms) Combat Center will continue to provide the best trained Marines and sailors to serve in those deployments. Many Marines are reflecting on all of the sacrifices of our brothers and sisters over the last decade of combat operations, but we remain focused on our mission.”
