Palm Springs City Council Unanimously Backs Same-Sex Marriage
The Palm Springs City Council gave unanimous approval to a resolution on Wednesday night supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.
The resolution doesn’t change the controversial law banning such marriages, but it does make Palm Springs one of the first cities to officially go on the record in favor of reversing the law approved by voters as part of Proposition 8.
The specific language states, “A resolution of the city counicl of the City of Palm Springs, California, supporting the right of full civil marriage equality for all residents of Palm Springs.”
“I’m not sure what this will accomplish,” said one of KESQ’s Twitter followers, “besides (upsetting) the pro-discrimination voters. Marriage is a state issue, not the city’s. Either way, I am proud to call this place my home.”
Proposition 8 has been making its rounds in the federal appeals courts for the last year.
Most recently, supporters of the law banning same-sex marriage asked that the case challenging it be dismissed on the grounds that the federal judge who heard the case was gay and had a longtime partner.
