Indio’s New Rules For Traveling In Golf Carts

Indio motorists today can now legally travel around select parts of the city in golf carts.

A city official today unveiled the details of the Indio Golf Cart Transportation Program, which allows people to ride their golf carts on certain sidewalks and bike lanes within city limits.

Interested participants must apply for a two-year permit in order to be allowed to drive their golf carts in the designated areas, city spokesman Chris Escobedo said. Those permits cost $50 and are good for two years. Applicants must show proper proof of insurance for the driver and golf cart and complete the necessary form, he said.

“We are making this process as user-friendly and efficient as possible, while ensuring that all safety standards are met,” said Tom Brohard, the city’s traffic engineer.

The city has picked about a dozen routes on which golf carts can be ridden. Most are in the northeast section of the city, including paths on Jackson Street and Golf Center Parkway.

A complete list of the approved golf cart routes can be found on the city’s website.
