Firefighters Battle Garage Fire In Desert Hot Springs

Firefighters worked Monday afternoon trying to douse a garage fire at a home just off Palm Drive.

Cal Fire officials said the fire was reported at 3 p.m. near the intersection of Estrella Avenue and Cactus in Desert Hot Springs.

The first arriving company reported the single-family home had heavy smoke coming from it. They could also see smoke coming from palm trees on the property.

The source of fire was located inside the garage, where some cars had evidently caught fire, fire officials said.

The flames spread to some nearby palm trees in the yard. Embers also flew across the street and started fires in other palm trees.

All were extinguished.

A family of three adults and one child were forced to find another place to live, seeking help from the American Red Cross.

Two of their pet dogs also died in the fire.
