Firefighters Make Progress On Crestline Fire

Firefighters have made major progress surrounding a small but potentially dangerous fire that erupted in the San Bernardino National Forest as gusty Santa Ana winds blew through Southern California.

Authorities say the 15-acre fire near Crestline is 70 percent contained Friday afternoon.

Many mountain, valley and coastal areas remain under a red flag warning for dry, gusty conditions that cause extreme fire danger. The National Weather Service says some 50-mph wind gusts have been recorded but the Santa Anas are expected to ease by evening.

The fire erupted late Thursday when a pickup truck went out of control on a curve on State Highway 18. The truck rolled 100 feet down a hillside and burst into flames.

The driver escaped with minor injuries.

All but one lane has reopened.
