Family Member Talks About Deadly Interstate 10 Accident

“She doesn’t remember a lot, but just saying thought they had a blowout and this is why they pulled over,” said Diana Patino, the aunt of 21-year-old Alyissa Goss, who recounted what her niece told her about Sunday evening’s crash on Interstate 10 at Monterey Avenue in Thousand Palms.

The California Highway Patrol says her car was struck by two trucks as she tried to return to the road from the center divider.

Alyissa Goss’ sister, 19-year-old Elizabeth was also in the car along with three children in the back seat.

Alyissa’s 9-month-old daughter Neveah Sessoms was killed in the crash.

According to the CHP, the children were strapped in their safety seats, but the seats were not properly installed.

“I don’t understand because Alyissa, she adores her children and she always took care of them, always,” said Patino.

Alyissa who was not seriously injured has been bedside at Loma Linda University Hospital with her 2 1/2-year-old son Jasiah.

He’s in critical condition after undergoing surgery for bleeding and swelling of the brain.

“And now its all about praying for him to get better,” said Patino. “And he’s a little fighter, his grandmother calls him little dynamite cause he’s so feisty. We believe that’s what’s keeping him going.”

Elizabeth Goss was also seriously hurt. She’s hospitalized at Desert Regional Medical Center with a broken back, a fractured rib and a punctured lung.

Amazingly, her 11-month-old daughter wasn’t hurt in the collision.

“She was in the middle of the car in her car seat and she’s OK,” said Patino. “It was a miracle that she was fine, because the way that car looked, it’s a miracle anyone survived.”

If you would like to help with the funeral expenses for 9-month-old Nevaeh Sessoms, the family has opened an account in her name at the BBVA Compass Bank in Indio.

You can also make donations at any other BBVA Compass Bank Branch in the valley.
