High Winds Prompt Police To Watch Palm Springs Roads

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory from 6 a.m. today until 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon for Riverside County mountain and desert areas.

The weather service reported that winds were expected between 15 and 30 miles per hour today, with gusts of up to 55 mph tonight.

Additionally, a high wind watch was in effect from Monday afternoon through late Monday night, meaning that sustained winds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or stronger may occur, the NWS said.

A Palm Springs Police Department spokesman warned that areas of blowing dust and sand could reduce visibility to near zero at times, particularly north of Palm Springs.

“We will be monitoring the driving conditions and North Indian Canyon Drive, Gene Autry Drive and Vista Chino, through the areas of the Whitewater Wash, south of Interstate 10, for possible road closures,” the spokesman said. “Use Date Palm Drive or Highway 111 as alternate routes.”
