Modernism Week Kicks off in the Desert

Besides being appealing to the eye, this pre-fabricated home has an especially low ecological footprint.

Chris Mobley, of Modernism Week says, “What I like most about the house is that it’s running on all solar, which is cool.”

The home also has cork floors, wood ceiling and a lighting system you can control from your I-Phone. It has many features that are meant to reinvent the 21st Century home.

Mobley says, “I think people are looking to better their loves and living conditions and people are more eco-friendly minded, these days.”

It’s also a chance to get ideas for decorating, with mod-fireplaces, and midcentury furniture for the indoor and outdoor desert lifestyle. It’s appealing to people like Tracy Young, who traveled to the desert, from Newport Beach. She says, “It started with the architecture. I fell in love with the mid-century modern architecture a long time ago.”

You can take self-guided tours of the pre-fab showcase, February 17-26, from 10am to 4pm, at 575 N. Palm Canyon Drive, in Palm Springs. Admission is $5, at the door. It’s just one of 80 different events you can take part in, over the next 10 days, celebrating modernism.
