Athlete (Scholar) of the Week: Christian Guzman – Desert Hot Springs Football
Christian Guzman grabbed his fair share of touchdowns for the Desert Hot Springs Golden Eagles, but this week the wide receiver grabbed an academic honor that just may trump his athletic feats. Guzman was named the area’s “Student Athlete of Year.”
Guzman, a senior at Desert Hot Springs High School, has been selected as the TOP of 20 student athletes chosen for the 2012 National Football Foundation Riverside County ChapterScholar Athlete Award. He is the only student athlete in the CoachellaValley to receive this award this year. He became the third Golden Eagle in three years to be part of the top 20.
Nominees represent the best of both academics and athletic accomplishments. All nominees must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have at least an All-League Honorable Mention, and be active in leadership/community service.
As the top scholar athlete, Guzman will provide the keynote speech at an awards banquet honoring the 20 student athletes on March 18. The Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto will host the banquet. Christian has maintained a 4.41 GPA and has been contacted by several colleges and universities interested in his football talents (go figure). Guzman plans to major in engineering, but has not yet decided where he will attend college next fall.
