News Channel 3 Reporters Become Principals for the Day
Some of our News Channel 3, Telemundo, and sister station Local 2 News reporters were caught in the principals office Wednesday, and no they weren’t in trouble, but they did have some big shoes to fill — as they were each a “Principal for the Day.”
Reporters like Kate Cagle at Rio Vista Elementary, June Bulness at Ramon Alternative Center, Hernan Quintas at Two Bunch Palms Elementary, and Laura Yanez, was at her alma mater, Landau Elementary School.
About 21 Palm Springs Unified School District schools participated, letting community members of all walks of life run their campuses for the day.
“Police chiefs, fire chiefs, local business owners, all kinds of people,” said Brad Bryeans, the assistant principal of Ramon Alternative Center.
They got a taste of what it’s like to walk the school halls as the authority, and it’s not easy — our valley principals oversee anywhere from 500 to 2,600 students each day. They checked in on the different classrooms and even made their way to the playground during recess.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing that the community members take an interest in coming and visiting our schools and have the opportunity to see what we do everyday,” said principal Blanca Luna, of Landau Elementary.
It even gives the students some new encouragement.
“It’s good for the students to see the community members come and be apart of the school and school district. and for them to just be able to talk to you and talk about what you do,” said Bryeans.
Guest principals and the actual principals came together at the end of the day for a luncheon, held at PSUSD.
Each guest principal addressed what they experienced at their school, including the importance of the positive teacher, principal, and student interaction. Also, the use of technology students are mastering in the classroom and the “no excuses” motto that stresses the importance of going to college. Even with budget cuts that have led to overcrowded classrooms, the district is making each school year run as smooth and productive as possible.
Some principals admit “Principal for the Day” is one of their favorite days of the year. Principal Mike Long, of Rio Vista Elementary, even gave a big thanks to reporter Kate Cagle.
“You made my job much easier today, I appreciate you coming out,” Long said to Cagle.
