Palm Springs to consider hosting pentathlon

The Palm Springs City Council will discuss tonight hosting a 2013 competition for the Olympic sport of modern pentathlon.

The council will discuss hosting the “Desert World Cup” competition for the sport — which is fencing, swimming, equestrian jumping, shooting and running — at Palm Springs’ swim center, pavilion and stadium Feb.15-26, 2013, according to the agenda.

Rancho Mirage hosted World Cup pentathlon competition in February 2011.

The event drew 30 teams from around the world, totaling 150 athletes.

The council meeting agenda also includes extending the suspension of a two-hour parking time limit on parts of downtown streets and city parking lots and structures through June 2013.

The meeting will be aired live on Palm Springs Community Television Channel 17, Time-Warner Cable Channel 121 and online at www.palmsprings-ca.gov.
