Facts don’t square in Governor’s Prop. 30 Ads
Gov. Jerry Brown has begun airing television commercials for his November tax proposal that misstate how the billions of dollars raised by Proposition 30 could be spent.
At least three of the commercials say the money would go straight to classrooms and “can’t be touched by Sacramento politicians.”
According to the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office, some of the money would go to the state’s general fund, where it could be used for schools, public safety and a variety of other programs. The nonpartisan analysis further says “the Legislature and the governor would determine the use of these funds.”
The Legislature is populated by politicians.
None of Brown’s five TV ads, which began airing Wednesday, mention that Proposition 30 raises the statewide sales tax and income taxes on high-income earners.
