Pink cabs driving for a cure

Get out the New Yorker in you, and get ready to cab it for a cure.

“We wanted to raise money, but we also wanted to do something just for awareness,” American Cab spokesperson Andrea Carter said.

You can’t get much bolder than a fuchsia pink cab — a mobile reminder of breast cancer awareness. For the month of October, five of the red, white and blue cabs you usually see got a new paint job.

“When you see a specially marked ‘Fab Cab’ around town, take a picture of it with your smart phone and you in the picture, put it on Facebook and tag American Cab, and we’ll follow up with a 20 dollar voucher you can use on your next cab ride,” Carter said.

American Cab will match your twenty dollars and give it to the Desert Cancer Foundation.

Another way to help raise money — if you see an empty “Fab Cab” driving around the valley, hail it. You’re ride will be free, and the fare you would have had to pay will get donated to the Desert Cancer Society breast cancer screening program.

“We recently had one breast cancer survivor now going on 16 years, and she was just ecstatic that a local company was playing such an important role in breast cancer awareness,” American Cab cab driver Lars Thane said. “She almost had tears in her eyes, and was quick to say she’ll make sure a lot of her friends know about it.”

The community and American Cab can play a major part to help the valley fight the disease.

“We have almost 50 percent of all the rides here in the valley, and it makes it very simple for customers to be able to support us so we can support breast cancer awareness,” Thane said.

Proving truer than ever this month, pink is not only the new black — but also the new red, white, and blue, too.
