Superstorm Sandy causing flight cancellations

Superstorm Sandy is is taking a toll on air travel.

Flight operations at the major airports in the Northeast have come to a standstill, and it’s having a ripple effect across the country and elsewhere.

Flights have been running on schedule at Palm Springs International Airport, since there is currently no nonstop service to and from the East Coast. However, some travelers who planned to make connections to get back east are finding themselves stranded in Palm Springs.

“I got up this morning, I thought maybe I’ll try to beat the storm, so I was to get on this flight now at 2:30 and get in Pittsburgh midnight tonight, but at 10 this morning they canceled my flight to Pittsburgh, so I am now taking a flight tomorrow, arriving at midnight tomorrow night, hopefully,” said Audrey Dell who was visiting Palm Springs to attend her nephew’s wedding.

According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, more than 12,000 flights had been canceled through Tuesday, almost all related to the storm.
