Desert Recreation District employee accused of embezzlement
A longtime employee of the Desert Recreation District could face embezzlement charges.
District officials say the employee confessed to taking money and using it for personal use.
After an internal audit the District discovered discrepancies between revenues and receipts from a community membership program. After an internal investigation, the discrepancy was traced to a part-time employee.
The employee was fired and then turned over to sheriff’s deputies Tuesday. The sheriff’s department says he hasn’t been arrested yet, but they are investigating.
The district’s general manager says they are taking the problem seriously and are making quick changes.
“We take our stewardship of public funds seriously. Swift action upon uncovering the facts was necessary in order limit any further financial losses so that we can continue to provide the recreational programs, events and activities that our residents and visitors enjoy daily. We regret this incident and will cooperate with the authorities as they continue the investigation,” said general manager Kevin Kalman.
The Desert Recreation District provides a number of services and programs including after-school activities and health and fitness classes for community residents.
