Duroville trash clean-up set for Saturday

A long rundown Coachella Valley mobile home park was set to be cleaned of trash Saturday.

A coalition including Riverside County, Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services, LLC and community volunteers were planning to work together to clear accumulated trash and waste from Duroville, the dilapidated Thermal park which is slowly being shut down.

Many park residents have already been moved into modular housing units at the nearby Mountain View Estates in Oasis, constructed with a mix of state and county taxpayer dollars.

A statement from Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit’s office said the work would begin at 8 a.m. And continue to noon. Residents were encouraged to leaving large trash items in front of their lots by the road for pick-up. There will be no charge to them.

Residents can leave out furniture, large appliances, tree limbs and branches for pick-up. Burrtec crews will also accept electronic waste and tires without rims. Industrial, business and household hazardous waste will not be accepted the statement said.

Benoit said, “As the last residents of Duroville prepare to move into new homes at Mountain View Estates, we are providing an opportunity to pick up items that are difficult to dispose of.” Benoit continued, “I appreciate all the volunteer efforts coming forward to make the community a cleaner and safer place.”

Volunteers were planning to remove trash from unoccupied lots recently vacated by residents and focus on removing debris from the park’s southern section.

Completion of Mountain View Estates is a crucial component of the federal government’s plan to close Duroville, which sits on tribal land and is home to hundreds of farmworkers.
