Indio family hopes arrest of sister’s suspected killer brings answers

Two years ago terror struck Carmina Sepulveda and her family. It was the day her missing 19-year-old sister Karina was found dead in a cornfield in Coachella.

“Everything that happened was a nightmare come true,” said Sepulveda.

Charged with Karina’s murder, Raymundo Garcia Vasquez, 27, was arrested on Thursday at the Calexico border crossing, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sepulveda said she recognized the man in the mugshot.

“I think I had seen him once before with (Karina). It wasn’t a relationship but I think he wanted more than a friendship,” said Sepulveda. “He took a big piece of my family,” she added.

What led to her sister’s death is still uncertain, but the arrest brings Sepulveda’s family comfort in their search for answers.

Sepulveda said, “It was a relief but at the same time scary to know I’m going to find out things that will be painful but I need to know.”

Beyond anger, their faith and memories keep them strong.

“I’m happy to know the person is not out there and can’t hurt anyone anymore. Not again,” said Sepulveda.

Vasquez was booked at the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta and is being held on $1million bail. He is set to be arraigned Tuesday in Indio.
