Woman pushing wheelchair killed in Indio collision

Police said a motorist who struck and killed an Indio woman Wednesday evening was cooperating with their investigation.

Marie Valenzuela, 72, of Indio died a short time after she was struck by a motorist in a silver Chrysler Sebring along Palo Verde Street at Avenue 45.

The elderly woman had been pushing an elderly man in a wheelchair southeast across the street at 6:05 p.m. When she was struck. The elderly man was not harmed in the collision.

Valenzuela was rushed to John F. Kennedy Hospital in Indio where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation and no drugs or alcohol appear to be involved in the incident.

Authorities have not identified the driver or the man in the wheelchair.

The couple was not crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.
