Stolen Superbowl Ring traced back to Palm Springs

San Diego detectives say felony charges could be filed against three valley residents who tried to sell a stolen Super Bowl ring back to it’s owner, Hall of Famer Lance Alworth, for 40 thousand dollars. The 1971 ring was taken from a restaurant in San Diego known for displaying sports memorabilia. The ring was reported as stolen and investigated as a commercial burglary. Last month, twenty-five years after the theft, Alworth got a call from an unidentified person demanding 40-thousand-dollars for the ring. Detective Jaime Rodriguez says a couple who owns a Palm Springs boutique allegedly met the man with the ring through an acquaintance. Police say the couple loaned the man money and took the ring as collateral. Still no word on how exactly the ring made its way to the auction house where police tracked it down.
