Stolen car crashes into mortuary building after police pursuit

A car was stolen early Friday morning in Coachella and the driver led CHP officers on a high-speed chase that ended with the car crashing into a building on Jackson Street.

Officers saw a Nissan run a stop sign at 52nd Avenue and Monroe Street around 1:35 a.m. When they pulled the driver over, the car sped away driving eastbound on 52nd.

CHP said the driver continued to run stop signs and tried to make a sharp left turn at Jackson Street when the car veered off the road, crashing into the Forest Lawn Mortuary building just north of 52nd Avenue.

The suspect ran from the scene and managed to get away from officers.

A juvenile was found in the vehicle and was questioned before being taken to JFK Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, according to CHP. The suspect hasn’t been identified and the incident is under investigation.

Officers said the Nissan was reported stolen at the time of the crash.

There’s no word on how much the damage to Forest Lawn Mortuary will cost to repair.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver more details as the investigation moves forward.
