Locals react to NBA’s punishment of Clippers owner Donald Sterling

Palm Springs civil rights activist, Wes Rankins, considers Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling’s racist rant, offensive and unacceptable.

“That is not tolerated by anyone,” he said.

The National Basketball Association agreed Tuesday.

“Effective immediately, I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers organization or the NBA,” announced

The infamous recorded conversation got Sterling bounced from the NBA and cost him $2.5 million, which will be donated to anti-discrimination and tolerance organizations. Sterling can no longer attend any NBA games or practices, or be present at the Clippers facility and may not be involved with team business.

“I think they did terrific by getting rid of him, period. I think it’s wrong what he’s doing,” said Mary Lou Miranda.

As for Sterling’s future as owner of the Clippers, a three-quarters vote by the NBA’s 29 owners would be required. Commissioner Silver said he’s confident he has their support.

“I think the decision is the right decision. In this day and age we don’t need to hear that,” said Palm Springs resident Phil Martin.

When the Clippers hit the court without Sterling, Miranda said it will set an example.

“Not only a lesson for the Clippers or for him, it’s a lesson for everyone. We should think about what we say,” she said.

“If you hear something you don’t agree with, stand up. If you don’t stand up for something you’ll fall for everything,” said Rankins.
