Business owners want information about Zelda’s shooting

There are more questions than answers after a shooting at a popular Palm Springs nightclub. It sent one person to the hospital, but people in the area want to know why it took so long to find out about.

The shooting took place on April 18 around 12:50 a.m. in the parking lot of Zelda’s Nightclub, located at 611 S. Palm Canyon Drive. According to P.S.P.D. spokesman Harvey Reed, an employee was shot and taken to the hospital. The victim is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the 35 year old victim had possibly been in a dispute with the suspect in the parking lot when the suspect fired one shot at him. The suspect ran away from the scene before police arrived.

Business owners in the shopping center are weary after they got the news about it. “You don’t really like hearing about that in your, in the mall where you’re doing business,” said Russell Palenti, who works at a business in the shopping center.

It took them nearly two weeks to hear about it though. “We should have known something, been notified, or let us know what was going on,” said Palenti.

The police department didn’t respond to our request for an explanation. The owners say they would like one, because this is not something they’re used to seeing in the area.

“I feel really safe because there’s never been any major incidents here and during the day there’s security here, so the center is safe,” said Palenti.

Some who come to the area every day, feel differently.

Armen Shahnazarian says more should be done to keep everyone safe, especially with Zelda’s next door. “Hopefully there’ll be more security down here because the fact that you do have a nightclub here, so you do have an element of people coming in here, and drinking and partying and stuff,” saidShahnazarian.

Shahnazarian hopes more details come from the ongoing investigation so these store owners can focus on what they do, instead of worrying about if they’re safe. “I do feel bad for the owners that come in here and try and run a good business and stuff and have to deal with this stuff. It’s not that ideal for them.”

The shooting is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Palm Springs Police Department at 760-323-8116 or Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
