28th State Senate race remains too close to call

Riverside County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff Stone led the pack in the 28th Senate District race, and moving on to the November general election, but his opponent remained a mystery.

With all precincts reporting, Republican Indio City Councilman Glenn Miller had a 77-vote lead over former GOP Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia.

The tightness of the race means a final tally of provisional and other still-to-be counted ballots will likely determine who will face Stone in November.

Exchanges among some of the Republicans in the Senate race have been heated — Stone and Miller recently criticized out-of-district funds invested in Garcia’s candidacy, while Garcia asked the state Attorney General’s Office to investigate Stone over allegations of political corruption.

One of Stone’s supporters also asked for an investigation into Garcia’s finances.

Meanwhile, Coachella Mayor Eduardo Garcia, a Democrat, defeated Republican and public safety consultant Charles Bennett Jr. in the 56thAssembly District seat.
