No more plastic bags in Los Angeles

Smaller grocery and convenience stores in Los Angeles will no longer hand out single-use plastic bags starting in July.

The Los Angeles Times reported Sunday that the ban comes two years after city officials voted to phase out the bags to slash the amount of trash in landfills and the ocean.

Big-chain grocers and larger supermarkets in the city have been charging customers 10 cents for paper bags since earlier this year, or 15 cents or more for reusable plastic bags.

A slew of cities in California have passed similar measures, including San Jose, San Francisco and Long Beach.
