Mail in election ballots require two stamps

With election day around the corner, it’s important to make sure your vote counts. Many are unaware that two first class stamps are required to cast your vote when you mail in your ballot.

Gregory Height of Rancho Mirage was surprised to learn that.

“I think most people get their ballot, put the stamp on it and mail it at the nearest mailbox,” said Height.

Jackie Zavodnik agrees and thinks this election needs your vote.

“I just hope that everybody gets out and votes,” she said. “I’m worried that a lot of people don’t even know that we’re having this election and it’s very important.”

When people receive their voting ballot in the mail, it comes with instructions that clearly state both a one card ballot and a two card ballot require to first class stamps.

But, some say that’s not enough.

“I think there should be some public announcements to warn people about this procedure,” said Height. “This is another way of stopping people from voting.”

The only ones not required to pay postage are those who live in a mail ballot precinct and military voters. Everyone else is required to mail their ballot with two stamps.

The deadline to vote is November 4 at 8 pm. However, those who plan to mail in their ballot should plan to do so several days before that date as they must be received by the registrar office by then.
