Man identified in deadly collision on Landau Blvd

An elderly man has passed away from injuries sustained when he was struck by a car early Tuesday morning while trying to cross Landau Boulevard in Cathedral City.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the man as 84-year-old Howard Bergdoll of Cathedral City.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Landau Boulevard and McCallum Way at 5:45 a.m., a half hour before sunrise at 6:14 a.m.

Police said it wasn’t a hit and run collision. Cathedral City police Sgt. Scott Sharpe said the driver stopped and cooperated with the investigation and she won’t be cited.

She was driving a black Chrysler sedan southbound on Landau when Bergdoll crossed the street in the darkness. Police said he didn’t use a crosswalk and wasn’t wearing any type of reflective clothing.

The woman stopped and immediately called 911 for help. The driver wasn’t injured but her sedan’s windshield was smashed-in and shattered from the force of the collision.

There were no crosswalks or streetlights in the area.

Landau Boulevard was closed for several hours as the investigation took place. The Veterans Day holiday was expected to ease traffic congestion concerns at the scene.
