La Quinta resident dies in two-car crash

Snowy conditions may have played a role in a two-car crash Tuesday in the Morongo Basin area in which a La Quinta resident died.

A 73-year-old driver failed to slow down for a posted stop sign at the intersection of SR 247 and Reche Road at 5:30 a.m., authorities said.

California Highway Patrol said the man drove directly into the path of another vehicle.

Snowy and cold conditions were reported at the time of the crash.

The second vehicle was driven by Vathana Mitch Khanmanivanh, 38, of Banning.

The name of the victim, who died at the scene has not been released.

Khanmanivanh, who had to be cut from the wreckage and taken to Desert Regional Medical Center.
