Former CHP officer killed in shootout with deputies

Authorities say a man shot and killed after opening fire on a San Bernardino County sheriff’s helicopter has been identified as a former California Highway Patrol officer.

Sheriff’s officials say Francis Murphy Rose was killed by deputies on Monday in Apple Valley.

Deputies initially responded after receiving multiple calls about shots being fired in the neighborhood. Officials say Rose was shot while exchanging gunfire with deputies in patrol cars. No deputies were injured.

CHP officials reportedly confirmed Tuesday that the 42-year-old Rose was a patrol officer with the department and reported to the Barstow area office. He left the CHP in 2013.
