Palm Springs Black History Month Awards Gala

The Palm Springs Black History Month Committee held its 6th annual Awards Gala at the Hyatt Downtown Palm Springs Saturday.

The ceremony honored four recipients.

The ‘Sports Award’ recipient, Palm Springs High School head football coach Dan Murphy, was recognized for leading his varsity football team to win the 2014 CIF Championship in December.

The ‘Corporate Award’ celebrated Desert Promotional & Embroidery, LLC.

The ‘Humanitarian Award’ recipient was Melisse Banwer, director of the Tolerance Education Center.

Artist and activist, Bob Silva, was honored with the ‘James O. Jessie Lifetime Achievement Award.’

“It’s wonderful, they’re doing a fabulous job, especially to find people in the community who’ve done phenomenal things. Just a pat on the back or being recognized for their accomplishments, I think is really good,” said attendee Janet Johnson.

The event featured dinner, dancing, a raffle and silent auction.
