CVUSD parents, staff graduate from family leadership training

Parents and staff of the Coachella Valley Unified School District who trained for the Family Leadership Institute Program held a graduation ceremony last Friday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio.

The ceremony took place at 6:30 p.m. with special guest speaker Stedman Graham; better known as the partner of media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Graham is an educator, author and businessman.

CVUSD’s biggest goal this year is to engage parents in every way possible. The school district is hoping to achieve this by making sure all parents have the right tools and resources to help their child reach success both at home and in the classroom, according to a release from public information officer Francinni Zabata.

In January, the school district hosted a four-day trainer for parents wanting to become leaders in the community, helping pave the way for their children to go to college, build a career, and become responsible citizens.

Zabata said 40 CVUSD parents participated at Bobby Duke Middle School for the Family Leadership Institute Program. Colonel Consuelo Kickbausch led the training for parents of English learners to educate families about all of the free tools and resources available to them.

Many of the parents who trained for FLI attended the January 13, CVUSD Board Meeting, describing their experience of the four-day workshop to board members as “eye opening” and “motivating.”

“This can change the whole community, not just us parents,” said Albert Alvarez, a parent and volunteer at Valley View Elementary.

Superintendent Darryl Adams said he’s looking forward to having more parent leaders throughout the community to encourage families to get involved and prepare students for college and their careers.
