Security guard arrested for striking elderly man with radio

A security guard at a country club in Rancho Mirage was arrested last week for assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly struck an elderly man multiple times with a handheld radio during a fight.

According to the Rancho Mirage Police Department, 42-year-old Matthew Spain of Palm Desert is head of security at the Springs Country Club, located at 39039 Bob Hope Drive.

On Friday, February 13, two elderly men were trying to get into the country club as guests but didn’t have an address for where they were going. After a brief argument with security, Spain met with the two men.

Officers said the verbal argument turned into a physical altercation where Spain struck one of the victims with his handheld radio multiple times. Spain and the two victims were taken to Eisenhower Medical Center for treatment.

The Rancho Mirage Police Department didn’t say how the other man was injured. Spain was later arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
