Cathedral City High School student receives B&G Youth of the Year award
The Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs has selected a Cathedral City High School senior for its 2015 Youth of the Year award. Congratulations to Alejandro Flores!
Club members said the Youth of the Year award is the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs’ premier way to recognize one exceptional member for serving the club and community, demonstrating academic success, exhibiting strong moral character and working toward future goals.
To be eligible for the distinct honor, you must be a member of the Boys & Girls club for two years, an affiliate of the Keystone Club and a senior in high school prior to submitting the application and delivering a speech to four judges for evaluation, according to officials.
“Alejandro has been a member of our Club for three years, has volunteered over 200 hours this year alone, and has a real passion for learning,” said Terry Tatum, President of Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs. “We are grateful for his years of commitment and we are excited to honor Alejandro for his leadership and dedication. He is a true role model.”
Club officials said Flores attributes his leadership abilities, communication talents and prospective planning skills to his time spent in various programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Springs. He has been accepted to the University of California, Berkley and plans to major in engineering.
Each year the club holds its annual gala to honor the Youth of the Year. This year the gala takes place on Thursday, May 21 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Riviera Palm Springs.
In addition to honoring Flores at the gala, this year the club will also pay special tribute to a distinguished patron of the club, Stephanie Brazil.
Officials said Brazil is a member of the Palm Springs Pathfinders and played an integral role in establishing the Girls Club back in 1989 and has been actively involved with the organization ever since.
“Stephanie continually devotes herself to the development of the club and our community’s youth through personal support and financial backing,” continued Tatum. “For that, we are extremely grateful and look forward to honoring her at our event.”
The Palm Springs Pathfinders will also be recognized at the gala for their sustained support of the club.
The gala will be hosted by Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet and it’s open to the public. Tickets are $75 each or $750 for a table of ten.
