Hikers rescued in Mecca

Eight children and two adult hikers were treated for dehydration in the badlands east of Mecca Saturday.

The midday temperature at nearby Thermal was 85 degrees, but the relative humidity was a bone dry 7 percent.

Riverside County firefighters got the call about the group of ill hikers at 11:46 a.m. at the entrance to the Box Canyon, off of Avenue 66.

Two fire trucks and one helicopter arrived at the scene.

Two adults and eight kids were treated. Nobody was hospitalized.
