Photos released after man tries to rob bank in Palm Springs

Police are investigating after a man tried to rob the Bank of America on Ramon Road near Gene Autry Trail Monday morning.

The bank is located at 5601 E Ramon Road, near Walmart and Del Taco, and it was temporarily closed while officers were on scene.

The attempted robbery was reported at 9:43 a.m.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 spoke to Sgt. Kyle Stjerne with the Palm Springs Police Department. He said a light-skinned African American man handed a teller a note asking for money and told the teller not to trigger the alarm, but the teller did hit the alarm and the suspect ran off with no cash.

Nobody saw a weapon and nobody was injured.

The suspect is described as 35 to 45 years old, around 6’1″ tall with a thin but muscular build. He has a goatee and was wearing a straw gardening hat, a long-sleeved white shirt and green cargo pants, according to police.

It’s unclear if the man is on his own or if he was picked up by an accomplice. The Palm Springs Police Department is searching for the suspect and a helicopter was brought in to assist.

Officers are investigating whether this is the same suspect involved in a bank robbery that occurred at a Chase Bank on May 29. The Chase Bank robbery lead to the evacuation of Stater Bros on Vista Chino and Sunrise Way because the suspect left behind a wireless speaker in a black plastic bag, which he said was an explosive device, to aid in his escape.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is asked to call the Palm Springs Police Department at 760-323-8116.
