Pioneertown under voluntary evacuations
Update at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday night on the Lake Fire:
The San Bernardino County Sheriff Department has initiated a mandatory evacuation for the Burns Canyon and Rimrock areas.
Pioneertown is now under a voluntary evacuation.
There is a shelter for evacuees at 6162 Rotary Way in Joshua Tree.
Small animals may be taken to the Town of Yucca Valley Animal Shelter 4755 Malin Way Yucca Valley.
Large animals may be taken to the Yucca Valley Equestrian Center 7429 Avalon Ave. in Yucca Valley. The equestrian center had 21 horses, 3 goats and a donkey brought to the facility Thursday afternoon. Officials said they were also expecting at least two more horses and some pot-bellied pigs later in the day.
The Lake Fire burning in the San Bernardino mountains continues to grow and containment of the fire is down.
As of 7:00 p.m. Wednesday night, containment was down to 27 percent from 38 percent earlier in the day.
The fire has grown to 20,875 acres.
A primary area of of concern is the northeast edge of the fire which has burned into the headwaters of Little Morongo and Big Morongo Creeks. Aircraft and crews are working hard to stop the progression in that area.
The southern portion of the fire has burned into the North Fork of Whitewater and may continue to burn to the south. Hotshot crews are camped out in the area and will remain on scene for the next several days.
The spread of the fire is being caused primarily by burning debris rolling downhill.
Highway 38 remains closed from Angelus Oaks to Lake Williams.
The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Whitewater Preserve to Onyx Summit.
There are more than 1,900 personnel assigned to the fire.
There are now 5 air tankers assigned to the fire including 2 DC-10s.
The cause remains under investigation.
No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged.
