Painting brown lawns green during drought

Lawns and golf courses across the Coachella Valley are going brown to help during this historic drought, but a little paint could change that.

West Coast Turf hosted a workshop on organic Endurant Turf Colorant at the Palm Desert Soccer Park Wednesday.

Golf course superintendents, landscapers, home owners associations and water district officials turned out for the demonstration to see, firsthand, the brown grass instantly transform back to green.

“You can spray your lawn, fool all of your neighbors, save water and money at the same time,” said Danielle Scardino, of West Coast Turf.

“We decided we’re going to see what it’s all about because it’s right in line with where we want to go,” said Larry Williams of Dave Score Landscape.

Scardino said it’s a drought-friendly alternative for people who won’t give up their natural lawns, but can’t bare the drought-stricken grass.

“We want people to save their lawns. You can save your lawn. You don’t have to rip it out. You don’t have to have DG, you don’t have to have artificial turf,” she said.

How safe is this green paint?

“It’s completely safe and organic, safe for kids and pets. It dries in 30 minutes,” said Scardino. “You get an instant green. If you don’t want to over seed this season, you’re going to save probably 50 percent water.”

The paint costs about $25 per 1,000 square feet. West Coast turf said a spray should last two to three months.
