Caltrans delays daytime freeway bridge repairs in Indio

Caltrans is delaying bridge repairs Wednesday on Interstate 10 in Indio.

The agency is responding after the project brought interstate traffic to a crawl in the east valley Tuesday.

Two eastbound lanes were closed as crews performed maintenance on the bridge east of Jefferson Street during the morning rush hour and for most of the day.

The heavily-traveled section of roadway was stop and go for hours.

The work led to a traffic jam that stretched back to Jefferson Street and to Washington Street at times.

Crews had planned to do another round of repairs today with only one eastbound lane closure.

But Caltrans now says that’s not going to happen until they make changes to avoid a similar back-up.

“I was told 99 percent of this work has been taking place at night,” said Terry Kasinga of Caltrans. “I’ve already put in my request I want the completion done at night,” Kasinga added.

The construction is part of a nearly million dollar project to make improvements across Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

It is not part of the Jefferson Street interchange construction project.
