IRC reopens after San Bernardino massacre, county memorial service honors victims
A month after the San Bernardino massacre, 600 Inland Regional Center employees returned to work for the first time Monday. With extra security measures in place, the site is fenced off with guards checking employee badges. The conference room where 14 people were killed and 22 were wounded remains closed indefinitely.
The IRC reopened the same day hundreds of San Bernardino County employees and first responders gathered at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario for a private memorial service.
Gov. Jerry Brown also attended and several noted figures, including Pastor Rick Warren who encouraged attendees to grieve, but don’t do it alone.
“You need to release your grief,” said Warren. “Receive help from others. We’re better together.”
The private memorial service also welcomed former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as he shared his grief from the September 11 attacks.
“You can’t break our spirit,” he said.
Giuliani said to push forward and keep the community spirit alive.
“Fight back. Make something good come out of this,” he said.
