DUI driver steals car at grocery store, crashes in La Quinta

Police arrested 49-year-old George Huffman Jr. of La Quinta after they said he stole a car from the Sprout’s parking lot in La Quinta while the owner was loading groceries into the trunk on Saturday afternoon.

Police said Huffman Jr. drove drunk and fled northbound on Adams Street where he caused a crash at the intersection of Fred Waring Drive. The two people in the other vehicle, ages 58 and 52, were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center with major injuries.

Huffman Jr. was charged with vehicle theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury to others. He was admitted to the hospital for his injuries sustained during the crash.

Fred Waring Drive reopened Sunday evening.

A two-car crash involving a stolen vehicle has closed Fred Waring and Adams in La Quinta.

The Riverside County Sheriff Dept. received a call about a stolen vehicle in the area just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Immediately after they received another call of an accident at that same intersection of Fred Warning and Adams.

When sheriff’s duties arrived they did confirm one of two cars involved was stolen.

Three people were hurt. All were taken to the hospital, one with serious injuries, one with moderate, and one with minor injuries.
