Westbound Interstate 10 back open after long closure

Both westbound lanes of Interstate 10 are back open near Dillon Road after a hay truck fire closed down the freeway for hours Thursday afternoon.

Thousands of motorists were trapped on the freeway for hours. Some reported people trying to turn-around and go the wrong way to get out of the backlog.

All westbound lanes were shut down around 2:00 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities said traffic was backed up for about 15 miles.

Drivers were advised to avoid the interstate westbound through Coachella. The CHP said traffic was backed up all the way west of the Cactus City rest area.

There were no major injuries reported.
