UPDATE 2:45 a.m. — CAL Fire has contained and cleared the scene of a wildland fire in Coachella around 12:45 a.m.

Fire crews say the fire is under investigation.

_____

A fire burning near Harrison and Grapefruit Streets in Coachella is throwing up a huge plume of smoke over the Coachella Valley.

It’s burning in the area of the 86 Expressway and Avenue 48 in a wash area. Tamarisk trees appear to be providing most of the fuel for the flames shooting up to 40 feet into the air.

Firefighters are doing controlled burns to take some of the fuel away from the fire and appear to be making progress. No structures are threatened.

The California Highway Patrol has not reported any road closures because of the fire, and no word on any structures that may be threatened.
