Police investigate death on hiking trail in Palm Springs
The Palm Springs Police Department is investigating the death of a man found on the Palm Springs hiking trail behind Vons Rimrock shopping Center.
According to Palm Springs Police, they got a 911 call around 4:00 p.m. Thursday that there was a dead man on the trail. Fire crews along with officers from Palm Springs Police hiked about 1/2 mile up the trail, where they found a man dressed in street clothes deceased.
The exact cause of the man’s death is still under investigation. And Palm Springs Police cannot confirm if the man was a hiker or on the trail for some other reason. They have ruled out foul play at this time.
Police could not confirm if the man was hiking on the trail. According to hikers there are several homeless encampments that run along the trail.
With higher then normal temperatures in the forecast for the next few days the Palm Springs Police Department is asking people to be safe before hiking.
“It was 108 degrees when we got here and with the humidity we have, it is best not to hike. You probably need more water than you think you need,” said Sgt. Paul Abshire.
The trail is the Murray Peak Trail located just south of Highway 111 near Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs.
“Anybody that is from the valley should know better. When it’s 108 degrees or even if it’s 95 degrees out, you should be taking water with you and having a hat and all that kind of stuff,” said Guy Holtman, owner of Palm Springs Karate Academy which is located at the base of the trail.
