Palm Desert police to host ‘Coffee with a Cop’ to build community relations

The Palm Desert Police Department and community will be coming together in an informal setting to discuss community issues and build relationships while enjoying a cup of coffee on August 10.

Officers said the whole community is invited to attend the event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Starbucks located at 74836 Technology Way in Palm Desert.

The Coffee with a Cop Program provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions, learn more about the Palm Desert Police Department and meet the deputies serving the community, officers said in a news release.

Authorities said there isn’t a planned agenda for the Coffee with a Cop event; officers just want to give everyone an opportunity to voice their concerns and have a chance to get to know the deputies in their area.

Officers said the typical situations where they meet community members are usually not the best time for relationship building because they handle so many emergency situations, often dealing with a lot of emotions.

The Coffee with a Cop Program helps break down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction, according to police. It’s a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Similar events to the one being held in Palm Desert are taking place all across the country.

Anyone with questions about the event is asked to call Community Service Officer Stacey Austin with the Palm Desert Police Department at 760-836-1697.
